Title: A Novel Complex Image Expansion for Antenna Measurements Above a Lossy Half Space
Speaker: Dr. David Tonn, Naval Underwater Warfare Center (NUWC) Newport, USA
Webinar Date: September 7, 2022 11:00 AM-12:00 noon Eastern Time
Expansion of functions in terms of exponential sums is a technique that has been used in the past for applications in applied mathematics such as number theory. However, the technique also has interesting applications in the field of engineering. In this presentation, we shall discuss a novel approach to deriving an expansion of a particular function as an exponential sum and show how this expansion can be applied to the Sommerfeld Integral to give a novel Discrete Complex Image representation of the problem.
Dr. David Tonn is a Senior Engineer with the Submarine Electromagnetic Systems Department at NUWC Newport. He received his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering with an area of concentration in Electromagnetics and Physical Electronics from the University of Connecticut. His dissertation was in application of metamaterials for maritime antennas. Dr. Tonn’s research interests include low frequency, buoyant cable, and microstrip antennas, application of advanced materials to antenna design, low frequency radio wave propagation, optimization methods in electromagnetics, and antenna measurement methods. His work has been recognized with the 2013 IEEE Harry Diamond Memorial Award and several other notable awards. Dr. Tonn is also an adjunct lecturer in Electrical Engineering at the University of Connecticut and has taught classes ranging from undergraduate courses in circuit analysis to graduate level ones in advanced electromagnetics and antenna theory. His teaching efforts have been recognized with two teaching awards, including the University of Connecticut Outstanding Adjunct Teaching Award for the 2020-21 academic year. Dr. Tonn is a Senior Member of the Antenna Measurement Techniques Association (AMTA) and also holds nearly 30 United States patents for antennas and related inventions. He is also a technical reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals.
AMTA webinar series is introduced to highlight latest antenna measurement technologies to the AMTA community. Speakers are selected from the best papers presented at the AMTA conferences.
