Sunday Short Course

Michael Havrilla and Lydell Frasch to Present 2010 AMTA Symposium Short Course

Material Measurement Techniques

Michael Havrilla of the Air Force Institute of Technology and Lydell Frasch of the Boeing Company will present a short course titled “Material Measurement Techniques” Sunday, October 10, during AMTA 2010.

They will be joined by co-presenter Keith Whites, South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.

Topics to be covered in the Short Course include:

  • Electromagnetic characterization of Materials at RF and Microwave Frequencies
  • Measurement system Calibration and Standards
  • Uncertainty analysis for materials Characterization
  • Computational Electromagnetics in Materials Characterization
  • Characterization of Special Materials
  • High Frequency Characterization of Materials

Michael J. Havrilla received B.S. degrees in Physics and Mathematics in 1987, the M.S.E.E degree in 1989 and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 2001 from Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI. From 1990-1995, he was with General Electric Aircraft Engines, Evendale, OH and Lockheed Skunk Works, Palmdale, CA, where he worked as an electrical engineer. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Air Force Institute of Technology, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. Havrilla is a member of URSI Commission B, a senior member of the IEEE, and a member of the Eta Kappa Nu and Sigma Xi honor societies. His current research interests include electromagnetic and guided-wave theory, electromagnetic propagation and radiation in complex media and structures and electromagnetic materials characterization.

Dr. Lydell L. Frasch received the B.S. degree in physics in 1979 and the B.S. in Electrical Engineering in

1980, both from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Rapid City, SD.  He received the M.S.

and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI, in 1983

and 1987, respectively.

Lydell worked for the Dow Chemical Company, Midland Division, Midland, MI, from 1980 to 1983 on in-field, analytical measurement instrumentation.  He joined the Boeing Company, Seattle, WA, in 1988 as a senior RCS engineer.  He is currently a Boeing Technical Fellow, in St. Louis, MO.

His current research interests include the electromagnetic characterization of special materials, such as

composites and absorbers, the development of in-field measurement devices for characterizing materials, electromagnetic scattering phenomena with applications in radar cross-section analysis/measurement, and antenna measurement.

Dr. Frasch is a senior member of AMTA, a senior member of the IEEE, a member of ASTM International Committee D9 on electrical insulating materials, Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu, Sigma Pi Sigma and Sigma Xi.
